Polygon is a Layer 2 scaling solution for the Ethereum network that solves scalability and transaction speed issues, while improving the usability and user experience of decentralized applications. Polygon’s vision is simple: to build the internet of value. Just as the internet allows anyone to create and exchange information, the value layer is the foundational protocol that allows anyone to create, exchange, and program value. The internet democratized the way we access information; the value layer democratizes the way we enter the global economy. It makes decentralized finance, digital ownership, new coordination mechanisms, and more possible. It is a missing piece of functionality in the current internet and serves users rather than industry giants, monopolies, or intermediaries.
As the 2.0 version of Polygon, Polygon 2.0 is the blueprint and key module to build the value layer. It is a set of proposed upgrades that completely reimagines almost every aspect of Polygon, from protocol architecture to token economics to governance. Ethereum was the first to introduce the concept of the value layer. It signaled that people can create, exchange, and program value seamlessly and securely without intermediaries. But Ethereum and the cryptocurrency ecosystem don’t resemble other parts of the internet.
The internet we know has infinite scalability and uniformity. Specifically, infinite scalability means that the internet’s throughput has elastic scaling ability, and we can build it when we need more capacity. Uniformity means that information can be accessed from anywhere in the world as long as it exists in the shared environment. For blockchains, the scalability of a single blockchain is limited, and they have strict throughput limitations. Although we can increase capacity by creating new blockchains, doing so will undermine liquidity, reduce security, and capital efficiency.

The birth of Polygon 2.0 is to solve the problems of these traditional blockchains. Polygon 2.0 is a ZK-driven L2 sidechain network that achieves uniformity through a novel cross-chain coordination protocol. For users, the entire network will feel like using a single chain. The network can support almost an infinite number of sidechains, and cross-chain interaction can be done safely and instantly without additional security or trust assumptions. It has the characteristics of infinite scalability and uniform liquidity.
Polygon 2.0 will become a value layer similar to other parts of the internet, extending Ethereum to become a network that enables seamless, secure value creation, exchange, and programming, truly becoming a value layer. For the Polygon ecosystem, it has a formal governance process and continues to expand the power of the community, making the role of builders, creators, and all other participants in the Polygon ecosystem more meaningful than ever before.
