Will ZK Stack “unexpectedly” usher in a multi-chain concurrency era?

As OP Stack takes down BNBChain public chain and Arbitrum unveils its Orbit L3 weapon, Matter Labs also announced the launch of its ZK Stack open-source framework, aiming to build a HyperChain vision defined by ZK technology. Cryptocurrency researcher Haotian compared the similarities and differences among the three, as well as the challenges and significance of ZK Stack.

Simply put, ZK Stack aims to provide underlying architecture support for highly customized, private application ecosystems such as games, exchange sidechains, and enterprise chains. Based on ZK Stack’s technical advantages in Account Abstraction, asynchronous cross-chain invocation, and infinite scalability, it provides the possibility of constructing a complex multi-chain network era. This is similar to the application chain ecology of OP Stack and Arbitrum Orbit.

ZK Stack is more ambitious and does not make a choice between the L2 and L3 markets. Why is ZK Stack so confident in eating both layers? The success of zkSync at the L2 layer itself provides a successful template, while the advantage in asynchronous cross-chain invocation technology is the key at the L3 layer. In comparison, OP Stack is still limited in asynchronous cross-chain invocation, and although Arbitrum Orbit has made some improvements, the nature of framework constraints has not changed. In the framework infrastructure battle, ZK Stack’s competitive landscape is far ahead of OP Stack and the like.

Although the launch of ZK Stack is for competitive purposes, it directly upgrades one level of competition, and in the long run, the difference between what ZK Stack and OP Stack want to do is quite significant. It seems that we can really look forward to the next era of concurrent multi-chain driven by applications. Finally, a bold speculation is that in addition to the symbolic significance of the launch of ZK Stack, the direct benefits may accelerate the issuance process of zkSync.

However, ZK Stack’s challenges are equally daunting. Because Ethereum has a Gas Limit upper limit on contract calls, ZK Rollup still needs to be further expanded. Ethereum also needs to be further strengthened after the Cancun upgrade, and connecting heterogeneous chains will increase system complexity, requiring HyperChain’s core ZK algorithm to rely on zkSync for a long time.
