Vitalik Buterin does not want Ethereum to dwell on past achievements, but instead continues to solve old problems with new ideas and methods.
Vitalik said at the Permissionless conference in Austin, the capital of Texas, that even the latest applications in today’s application field are “not imaginative enough”.
DeFi is “cool”, NFT is a new primitive, but they have historical extensions, and using cryptocurrency for payment is good, but it feels familiar. These are individual parts designed to adapt to the same ecosystem as before.
What excites Vitalik is the decentralized social network Farcaster, which is a protocol similar to Twitter built on the OP mainnet, and has a companion Warpcast mobile application (Farcaster client), which is currently in an invite-only alpha version.
Like the social protocol Lens Protocol developed by Aave founder Stani Kulechov and running on the Polygon proof-of-stake chain, Farcaster also competes with centralized platforms using encryption tools.
Vitalik said: “Let’s see how far we can go in this direction. But I think, in the long run, it can really be integrated into everything else we do.”
For example, establish an organization to resist witches so that “894 likes correspond to 894 individuals, not 894 accounts controlled by a single organization.”
Vitalik said that solutions based on cryptographic technology have the potential to be more decentralized, protect privacy, and security than the current Web2 environment. Vitalik cited ENS, various ideas of human proof, and building modules such as POAP (or the next generation version using zero-knowledge technology would be better) and Gitcoin LianGuaissport.
“The dream of Ethereum is to truly create an independent open technology stack.” It can compete with companies like Google and Twitter without the need for closed and centralized systems like WeChat, Alipay, and an increasing number of CBDCs in China.
Vitalik envisions a gradual process where new Web3 users create an Ethereum address initially controlled by familiar services like Gmail, but using account abstraction to allow users to take ownership when they are ready to use more native cryptographic methods.
“Overall, give users the opportunity to gradually transition to decentralization, and ultimately, truly and correctly enter this completely independent stack. But in practice, all different parts in the stack work together.”
