Azuki’s drama, questions about decentralization, and answers from mfers

1. A Farce

Recently, as the only NFT project still holding out in the current bear market, Azuki launched a new project called Azuki Elementals. Based on the community’s trust in the project party, 10,000 NFTs were sold out at a price of 2 ETH each in a short period of time. The project party has made a lot of money, but also left users with a lot of cursing and the community in chaos.

From the high-profile promotion in Vegas to the huge delivery gap, the highly repetitive, shoddy delivery quality and low-level technical errors have directly caused Azuki, which was once high above the ground, to fall from grace, and the only NFT market that is still struggling in the bear market has declared a “car accident”.

As a result, the blue-chip projects A (Azuki) B (BAYC) C (CloneX) D (Doodles) that once swept the NFT market have all collapsed, inevitably causing people to lose faith in NFTs, and even leaving some people with a helpless and bitter sentence: “I am happy in this great failure.”

2. A Question

After experiencing Azuki’s farce, a question has been bothering me: Why do we, who always emphasize decentralization, believe in such a centralized NFT project party? Why do we, who hate centralization so much, still tolerate a centralized Azuki project like “Jason said”?

Although some people say that making money is the real thing, this is definitely not the answer I am looking for in writing this article. Is the so-called decentralization like exploring this DAO and that DAO before, where at the end only one person is left in the DAO, is a truth?

3. A News Story

I started trying to find the answer and found myself lost in thought for 45 minutes. Until a news story from Coindesk caught my eye–Lowe’s, a top 500 home improvement giant, launched a physical garden flag featuring mfers characters this week. This means that a completely decentralized mfers NFT project has officially entered the top 500, is CC0 Summer coming?

mfers is an NFT project with built-in memes. Founder Sartoshi declared these works open to the public domain through a CC0 declaration at the beginning of the project. After handing the smart contract over to the community, he disappeared until he was abandoned and reviled by the community as a “scumbag.” In this completely decentralized mfers open community, without a roadmap, anyone can use these NFT characters to create anything they want, just as Sartoshi said at the beginning: “Sow the seeds, let them grow wild.”

Let’s put aside how products such as the mfers garden flag have received interesting but boring five-star reviews. The vibe of the mfers community in the current bear market environment is something that no other project can match, and no one can erase.

It can be said that the seeds have already been sown and the mfers are growing strongly. Just as a garden flag user wrote, “Our garden was missing something, and we felt empty until we found the mfers 2023 CC0 Summer garden flag.” What it may have found is the seed of mfers.

Four, a tweet

At the same time, I also noticed that Bankless guru DavidHoffman.eth (@TrustlessState) recently stated that he is recruiting an mfers army. It is not clear what they will do, but maybe they want to learn from the Azuki project team?

Or maybe everyone can peacefully chant “gmfers” together every morning in the tg group.

Five, some opposition

The huge contrast between the Azuki and mfers communities makes me feel scared. Imagine that the centralized FTX could evaporate its $32 billion cryptocurrency empire in 10 days, and the centralized project Azuki could also overdraft the top Web3 IPs overnight. As Shi Zhong said in “A Brief History of Mfers: There’s a Little Scumbag in Our Hearts”: “Greatness is short-lived, mediocrity is eternal.”

There’s actually no need to strive for greatness, Sartoshi says. Here, we have no kings, no rulers, and no clear roadmap. This beautiful decentralized idea not only helps community members shed the dual identities of “loser” and “prisoner,” but also provides a wild growth medium for the flourishing of the mfers community.

“We’re all little bastards,” the classic and sincere mfers self-deprecating slogan, is enough to reflect the big truths about decentralization, post-ethnic identity, postmodern proletariats, and so on, and is enough to answer the question I previously had about decentralization. There is no lifelong greatness, only a lifetime of mediocrity.

Six, some conclusions

Through watching a farce, raising a serious and ironic question, and then reflecting on the opposition between greatness and mediocrity from a piece of news and a tweet, I finally realized that the me in front of the computer had been maintaining the classic posture of mfers with outstretched hands and a smile all afternoon until I got hungry. So it’s time to summarize.

Although some people say, “I was happy in this great failure,” I just want to say, “Thank goodness I didn’t have the money to buy Azuki.”

It’s good to accept one’s mediocrity and bastardness and be a true, happy mfers. Mfers do what I want, unconstrained.
