“Food and sex, the great desires of humanity.”

When hungry, we think about food; when grown up, we think about love. These are desires that everyone has. The view on love and marriage is a mirror of society and the industry, whether it’s the Taiwan of the last century in movies or the WEB3 era in 2023. People have always contemplated love and marriage, conflicts between old and new ideas, and the pursuit of life goals.

What are the emotional states and views on love and marriage in the cryptocurrency community? “Would you (still) look for a partner in the cryptocurrency community?”

We once conducted a poll on X (Twitter), and the results showed that 51.9% of people are not willing, 13.9% are willing, and 34.2% don’t care.

With questions and curiosity, we talked to many people within and outside the community about their emotional lives. Some hate heartless men, some accuse women of lacking loyalty, and some CPs have love and affection.

Love in the Cryptocurrency Community, a Bit Dangerous

Impatience is one of the keywords for people in the cryptocurrency community.

Choosing to enter the cryptocurrency community means choosing an unstable life, which is completely different from the conventional life.

Being constantly on the move between countries and cities, people in the cryptocurrency community rarely have time for love.

They often go on business trips, participate in activities day and night, cancel date plans at the last minute, have meals while attending international conference calls, accompany “monitoring screens” through video calls from different locations, have dinner while making phone calls for socializing, and stay awake all night until dawn…

These scenes have become commonplace in the daily lives of people in the cryptocurrency community. Occasionally, there are also some “dark dishes” added.

In the midst of intimacy, the other person loses interest due to drastic market fluctuations, ending the excitement” has become an industry joke.

Although cryptocurrency practitioners travel around, most of them work from home and spend 24 hours a day in the cryptocurrency community, so they don’t have many opportunities to meet people outside the community.

Little 7, who recently entered the community, happened to meet her ex-boyfriend who also worked in the cryptocurrency community through a dating app.

At that time, she firmly believed that she had met her “soulmate.” “No one has much opportunity or energy to deeply understand a person, so they are very guarded.”

Little 7 said that the image the man portrayed collapsed quickly. After the novelty wore off, he gradually revealed his NPD (narcissistic personality disorder) nature. They were extremely self-centered and only loved themselves.

Accustomed to working in a multi-threaded mode, some people in the cryptocurrency community also enjoy polyamorous relationships in their emotional relationships. Many people have specific date partners in different countries and cities and do not develop long-term intimate relationships with any of them.

小 7 also said that there are many “smart and beautiful” girls in the cryptocurrency circle, but there are also many who want to take shortcuts. If there are too many temptations around their boyfriends, it is easy to feel insecure.

The lack of a stable and unpredictable intimate relationship causes those who were once in love to turn away.

Even well-known figures in the industry, like the Ocean King, said they would stick to their principles and not date women in the industry because it’s “too easy to die socially.”

Little N, who has had experience dating in the industry, has learned a deep lesson.

“The industry is too small, you can’t avoid running into each other. Once you break up, it becomes especially awkward to see each other again, and it’s easy for all the details and privacy of the relationship to become gossip among others in the industry.”

In addition to the emotional value between two people, considering family responsibilities, both men and women in the cryptocurrency circle are also “excluded” from the selection range.

In a Twitter survey, most people said they didn’t want to find a partner in the cryptocurrency circle because of family reasons, and the summary is:

“One family cannot have two gamblers.”

Andrew, a practitioner, told DeepTech Flow that he would never date a woman in the cryptocurrency circle because “they can’t settle down, their ambitions are too great, and they can’t be a gentle mother. In a family without a gentle mother, there is a high probability that three generations will be unhappy.”

Some people also think it’s terrifying that a cryptocurrency wife understands wallets and can copy encryption codes.

Many outsiders still view the blockchain and cryptocurrency industry with a “biased lens.” They don’t want their future wives, husbands, daughters-in-law, or sons-in-law to be “speculating” in “scams” all day long.

Men and women in the cryptocurrency circle, no one is interested in anyone

YOYO and her cryptocurrency colleagues discussed relationships and found an interesting phenomenon: men and women in the cryptocurrency circle seem to not be interested in each other.

“Don’t date men in the cryptocurrency circle, they’re only here to make quick money. They only care about money and have no love.”

YOYO has seen too many people in the industry whose values have been distorted after benefiting from the industry’s dividends. She never considers dating men in the cryptocurrency circle.

They smell of copper, too materialistic, using money to objectify everything, including love and women.

“If they win, they get young models in clubs; if they lose, they go to work at sea.” “One coin, one young model” has long been a rallying cry in the cryptocurrency bull market.

There are also many legends of mine owners and cryptocurrency big shots spending lavishly in certain commercial KTVs in first and second-tier cities.

Many people in the cryptocurrency circle started from scratch, and with certain opportunities and luck came rapid wealth, but it also brought about a self-compensation mentality.

“What I didn’t have before, I now want to enjoy twice as much.”

Especially for exchange and project practitioners, they not only have to bear the pressure of market fluctuations but also face complex unknown risks.

The work is “intense and exciting,” with uncertainty every day, which makes them consider “living in the present and living freely” as their life motto. In the cryptocurrency circle, rumors about industry leaders having various romantic affairs overseas occasionally circulate.

You Only Live Once, you only live once.

“Life’s pleasures should be enjoyed to the fullest. Have wine while it is available,” indulging oneself is certainly pleasant, but it may be a disaster for the other half.

Some female practitioners have expressed that when choosing a cryptocurrency guy as a boyfriend, they must lower their expectations. “He can love you very much and treat you well, but he is also inevitably fond of playing around.”

Similarly, male cryptocurrency enthusiasts have the same concerns.

“Can’t hold on,” Nil expressed that many cryptocurrency girls often go clubbing, play cards, and participate in various business events, which allows them to easily come into contact with cryptocurrency big shots. Additionally, there are many cryptocurrency “colorful ghosts” (LSP), which makes him feel insecure.

Furthermore, some male cryptocurrency enthusiasts have stated that the cost-effectiveness of pursuing cryptocurrency girls is too low.

Perhaps after witnessing too many cases similar to “a girl from the financial industry in ’91 made a guy spend 50 million yuan and there are other sugar daddies,” some male cryptocurrency enthusiasts carefully review and summarize, starting to formulate “higher ROI” romantic investment plans.

“Cryptocurrency girls have seen money, and it is also difficult to please them with money. If you spend the same amount of money in traditional industries, you can suppress others and easily find a better-looking, more innocent partner with ‘financial power’.”

Cryptocurrency Couples: Success in both career and love?

Does all the above discourse and the occasionally circulated cryptocurrency and financial industry PDF melodramatic writings in WeChat groups make you doubt “love”? But perhaps this is also a kind of “survivorship bias”.

The injured shout loudly, while the happy ones keep silent, secretly enjoying themselves under the covers.

King, a practitioner, stated that there are many “underground couples” in the cryptocurrency circle who do not publicly disclose their relationships and deliberately keep a low profile. They also have professional interactions, but people around them do not know that they are actually in a romantic relationship.

This situation is not only present in the Chinese community but also in the overseas cryptocurrency industry, where there are also many hidden underground couples.

An encrypted VC that invested in well-known projects such as Farcaster has its founder in an undisclosed romantic relationship with one of the female partners.

Regarding this, Sienna, who used to work for a well-known Silicon Valley encrypted VC, said she understands. Her boyfriend is a well-known project founder in the industry. In her opinion, when dating in the industry, if one person has a higher title or position, others are more likely to label you as “so-and-so’s boyfriend/girlfriend” and make relevant associations.

A girl named Lisa who found her other half and got married in the cryptocurrency industry said that her principle now is to keep a low profile, and she didn’t even post wedding photos in her friends circle.

“People in the crypto community love gossip too much. It’s not easy to find a partner, so we have to be low-key.”

Among many dramatic stories, crypto couples can also create many attractive and sustainable sparks.

For example, they have more common topics, deep understanding of each other’s values, take turns trading and investing in cryptocurrencies, and support each other along the way.

As a business manager who has been in the crypto industry for many years, Niki was asked by her boss to run a meeting on her first day in the industry. Her business KPI was to recruit 300 people, which was a huge challenge for her, who suffers from social anxiety.

Fortunately, she met her current boyfriend in the crypto industry at that time, and with his encouragement, she successfully completed the task.

Over the years, the two of them have been mutually supportive in their careers. Niki also told DeepTechFlow that she found more problems when dating someone outside the crypto industry compared to dating someone within the industry.

It’s difficult for the other person to understand her way of working, so they often argue.

In the blockchain industry, it’s either you cheat me or I cheat you,” this is what Niki’s ex-boyfriend outside of the industry said.

Because of policy reasons, he believed that the industry in China has too much risk, so he constantly tried to persuade Niki to leave the crypto industry.

Niki’s response was, “I can love you, but it’s not enough for me to give up my career.

Therefore, Niki believes that if both parties in a relationship are in the crypto industry, they can at least understand each other and grow together.

In the eyes of experienced practitioner Feimo, not looking for a partner within the crypto industry is a false proposition, “even if you date someone outside of the industry, they will eventually enter the industry and become a part of the crypto community.”

Feimo has dated a boyfriend from the crypto industry before, and although they eventually broke up, she still longs for finding love in the crypto industry.

“Forever young, forever teary-eyed,” Feimo believes that crypto couples can build revolutionary friendships.

“We experience big wins and big losses together, make money together, stay up all night fighting together, always curious about new things, become digital nomads, and travel to every corner of the world. The so-called youth is about openness and abundant energy, which is the foundation of the cryptocurrency industry.”

When it comes to criticism of female participants in the industry, Feimo strongly defends them. In her opinion, female participants in the crypto industry are high-quality partners for dating and marriage.

“Crypto girls have a strong ability to learn. Today, they can study DeFi, and tomorrow they can research storytelling with small image IPs. You don’t have to worry about them being deceived, or about them getting Alzheimer’s when they grow old. They are the most beautiful fighters who can even dance in the square.”

“The crypto girl may not know how to cook, but she knows how to hire a housekeeper without losing money. She also knows where in the world to be a Nomad for beauty and investment in real estate. She knows when to freeze her eggs and have a child during a bear market. When she can’t make money in the industry, she knows how to trade stocks and forex with a long-term perspective…”

In the crypto world, there are still many loving couples who have successfully entered into marriage.

Arthur Breitman and Kathleen Breitman are the founders of Tezos. Their acquaintance started with a random invitation.

At that time, Kathleen was still a sophomore in college when they first met at a lunch meeting in New York for classical liberals who advocate for anarchism. Arthur was a quantitative analyst at Goldman Sachs at the time.

The two went through a period of being both mentors and friends, discussing liberal political views and studying cryptocurrencies. They founded Tezos and found love. They were even jokingly called the “money-grabbing couple” by foreign media due to Tezos’ massive fundraising.

LianGuairis Rouzati, the wife of Aave founder Stani Kulechov, was previously a partner at IDEO and later joined Aave as the ecosystem lead.

Her name is “LianGuairis,” so Stani deliberately proposed to her in Paris. During the early development of Aave, things were not going smoothly. His wife gave him unwavering support. In a previous interview, he said:

“Since May, I have been sleeping about four hours a night, so busy. I am very lucky to have the most supportive wife in the world. She has helped me in many ways, and I am very grateful for that.”

On July 4, 2023, their child, Bear Atlas Kulechov, was born in London and immediately received the domain address of the decentralized social platform Lens created by Stani. From the first day of birth, he became a “Baby on chain,” which can be considered a unique romance in the crypto industry.

In the Chinese crypto world, there are couples working in exchanges, projects, VCs, and media. Many of them have achieved excellent results by supporting each other in their careers.

Some people say that love at first sight is the moment when all boundaries are broken.

Regardless of bull or bear markets, I wish everyone can have their own moment of love at first sight and find their soulmate.
