Just another collaboration? Google Cloud partners with LayerZero

Google Cloud x LayerZero

LayerZero and Google Cloud have announced the integration of Google Cloud as a new “oracle” option for building applications on LayerZero. As a refresher, the Oracle role in LayerZero is responsible for verifying whether messages in cross-chain message requests have been processed by the source chain.

Applications built on LayerZero can now choose from four different oracle options, including Google Cloud, Chainlink, Polyhedra’s zkLightClient, and the Oracle managed by Polygon and Sequoia.

Unlike the previously added oracle providers supported by LayerZero, Google Cloud will replace the Oracle managed by Polygon/Sequoia and become the default configuration for applications wishing to use LayerZero as a plug-and-play cross-chain solution. This is the first change to the default configuration since LayerZero was launched in March 2022. While Google Cloud will now serve as the actual validation standard for LayerZero, the protocol still allows applications to adopt a modular approach and choose other providers or combinations of configurations for additional validation assurance.

Impact

A few months ago, we reported on why LayerZero’s Series B investors valued the network at up to $3 billion, on par with many mature L1 networks. Specifically, we detailed how LayerZero’s architecture allowed LayerZero Labs to outsource a significant amount of infrastructure development work and focus on attracting new applications and establishing strategic partnerships. The collaboration with Google Cloud is the latest example of this strategy continuing to play out in real-time.

LayerZero has now become one of the most mature cross-chain solutions in the market. The protocol has integrated with 34 networks and sees new applications joining every week. It also has the largest bug bounty program in the cryptocurrency space ($15 million) through the Immunifi platform. With its resources, Google Cloud should now provide stronger security standards for cross-chain information in the network.

Looking ahead, there are two aspects to consider in LayerZero’s roadmap. First, Google Cloud’s time as a validator and core infrastructure provider in the Solana ecosystem is only a few months away. LayerZero may leverage its new partnership to establish a reliable connection between the Ethereum and Solana networks, which has been lacking in the cryptocurrency space due to the complexity of development. Second, there are increasing speculations about the potential release of the LayerZero token. Airdrop farmers continue to inject vitality into network activity in anticipation of usage-based airdrops, and derivative platforms like Hyperliquid have even created speculative mechanisms before the token is launched. The collaboration with Google Cloud may be the final infrastructure development before the highly anticipated token release.
